In a direct response to the growing flood of AI-generated music on streaming platforms, Spotify has officially launched a new verification system designed to help listeners distinguish authentic human artists from AI personas and content farms.
The new program, called “Verified by Spotify,” marks qualifying artist profiles with a light green checkmark icon and “Verified by Spotify” text, appearing both on artist profiles and next to artist names in search results.

Spotify’s head of global artist partnerships, Ashley Graver, said the idea for the new verification badge stemmed from conversations with artists, their teams, and their fans — noting that “listeners need to trust that the artists they’re listening to are real artists building careers in music.”
Recent data from Deezer suggested that AI-generated tracks now account for roughly 44% of daily uploads across the industry — a staggering figure that has put pressure on streaming platforms to act. The problem was made viscerally real last summer, when an indie band called The Velvet Sundown racked up more than 1 million plays on Spotify before heavy speculation forced the supposed group to confirm that all of its tracks were AI-generated.
To receive the badge, artists must meet specific criteria: an identifiable presence both on and off the platform — such as concert dates, merchandise, and linked social media accounts — consistent listener activity and engagement over time, and compliance with Spotify’s platform policies. Profiles that primarily represent AI-generated music or AI-persona artists are not eligible.
At launch, Spotify says more than 99% of the artists that listeners actively search for will be verified — representing hundreds of thousands of artists, the majority of them independent, spanning genres, career stages, and geographies. The priority is artists with active fan interest or who have made meaningful contributions to music culture and history, rather than “content farms whose content is primarily designed for passive or background listening.”
Alongside the badge, Spotify is also introducing a new section in beta across all artist profiles — regardless of verification status — that highlights key details like career milestones, release activity, and touring history. Spotify describes this as similar to nutrition facts on packaged food: a quick, reliable snapshot of an artist’s authentic activity on the platform.
The green checkmark will begin to roll out across the platform over the coming weeks.
